From discussions to decisions: youth voice in Brussels

Young trade union representative from all over Europe actively contributed to discussions on the future of work and youth involvement at a recent event „Your Europe, Your Say! – YEYS” in Brussels, which took place on March 19-20.

The meeting brought together young activists, policymakers, and social partners to exchange views on the challenges facing young workers today. Key topics included job security, fair wages, quality employment, and the role of youth in shaping labour market policies.

Representative of the Lithuanian Trade Union Confederation Jonas Januškevičius emphasized the importance of ensuring that young people are not only heard but also meaningfully involved in decision-making processes. According to the participants, youth engagement must go beyond symbolic participation and translate into concrete policy outcomes.

The event highlighted that young workers across Europe face similar issues, including precarious employment, limited access to social guarantees and housing, as well as difficulties entering the labour market. Strengthening cooperation between countries and organizations was identified as a crucial step toward addressing these challenges.

J. Januškevičius noted that such international platforms provide valuable opportunities to share experiences, build networks, and develop common strategies. Cooperation at the European level is essential in order to effectively defend workers’ rights in a rapidly changing economic environment.

The discussions in Brussels reaffirmed a shared commitment to empowering young people within trade unions and ensuring that their voices contribute to real decisions, not just debates.
